Since 1999, Epic Games’ corporate headquarters has been based in Cary, North Carolina. Since Epic Games released Fortnite on July 21, 2017, this popular multiplayer shooting game around the world. The company is on the right track of large-scale development.
Recently, Epic Games is planning to purchase an old shopping mall with nearly 1 million square feet of space, and plans to complete all the renovations within 3 years and transform it into a new global headquarters. This old supermarket, Cary Towne Center, is about 2 miles from Epic’s current headquarters. Epic purchased the 980,000 square foot Cary Towne Center in this transaction for $95 million.
Cary Towne Center opened for the first time in 1979, but the huge changes in the way consumers shop and the continuous shift to online stores made the shopping center really start to suffer losses in 2016. Like many shopping malls in the United States, Cary Towne Center occupies 87 acres. Due to the turbulent online shopping trend, the main tenants have all left or closed, so it has been difficult to keep open. By 2019, everything was over, the existing owner CBL defaulted on the mortgage loan from the shopping center and sold it to Turnbridge. Its current owner bought it for $31 million in 2019, and then asked the Cary Town Council to approve its rezoning, which would allow office uses, hotel rooms, and multi-family residences other than commercial space.
WRAL-TV in Raleigh pointed out that only a few shops are open and many shopping centers are closed. The shopping mall is scheduled to be demolished after the 2020 holiday season to make way for mixed-use spaces including residential units, hotels, office buildings and new retail areas. At the same time, Epic had planned to expand the existing headquarters, but has now confirmed that the acquisition of Cary Towne Center means that the expansion will not continue.
Epic Games plans to begin development at the new headquarters this year. Epic purchased the property from Turnbridge Equities and Denali Properties, which bought it in January 2019 after losing three anchor tenants in the mall as part of a bad sale. Turnbridge and Denali plan to transform it into a multifunctional development project called Carolina Carolina Yards.
A spokesperson said in an email to The Verge that Epic’s property development plan includes the demolition of some of the existing structures on the site, but the company did not provide any further details. Said that the plan is still in its infancy. Until the new headquarters is ready, Epic will continue to operate from its existing office on Crossroads Boulevard in Cary, three miles away.
Epic raised $1.78 billion in a financing round last summer, and its valuation is approximately $17.3 billion. Even though the company is still involved in the ongoing legal battle with Apple over fees in the App Store, Epic's Fortnite is still very popular in 2020, with more than 350 million registered players as of May.
