Rainbow Six Siege Made Aesthetic Changes on Art and Maps to Fit Asian Regulation

Patch Notes   PS4 Games   Xbox One Games   PC Games   2018-11-05 09:15:54
Ubisoft announced that Rainbow Six Siege is coming to Asian territories and with that there will be some cosmetic changes that will arrive with a single, unified version of the game to fit Asian regulation. The single global version will still have differences per region. China will have its own servers and cosmetic items for example. As you can see from the following new dev blog by Ubisoft, those changes won’t impact the gameplay of the game.

Aesthetic changes

“ We are currently working towards preparing Rainbow Six Siege for expansion into Asian territories. As such, there will be some adjustments made to our maps and icons to ensure compliance. None of these changes will have an impact on gameplay. ”

Instead of operating two parallel builds of Rainbow Six Siege simultaneously, by maintaining a single build, we are able to reduce the duplication of work on the development side. This will allow us to be more agile as a development team, and address issues more quickly, Ubisoft explained in a blog post in such a way. They just make less violence, gambling, and mild sexual content in the game and the "core" of the game, the gameplay will not change. From its latest blog post, players can see some graphical and icon changes on the map. For example, they changed melee kill and friendly fire notifiers, to graffiti and other decoration of numerous maps were shown off. Slot machines, neon signs of dancing women, environmental blood and graffiti featuring skulls will all be changed or removed entirely.

In addition, the Ubisoft also realize that for some elements, it is not possible to have a completely global build. Therefore, there will be some things that are split build-wise. It seems that the game will actually have a regional version of the game for Asia. At the moment, what exactly will be changed only for Asia wasn't specified, but it could have to do with the game's blood content or in-game cosmetics. Aesthetic changes will be global to all versions, but core gameplay could be changed for Asian regions, especially for China, the world’s biggest market for games which has a historically harsh and slow regulation process for games. However, those changes are not very welcomed in the Siege community. They think the changes are tantamount to censorship. Players also note that the application of these graphical changes as currently outlined is inconsistent. For example, recent Halloween skins which include Jager’ s head being changed to a skull? How blood it is? Moreover, the removal of slot machines from the Club map is inconsistent with the game’ s own Alpha Packs loot box system, which is often considered being like gambling thanks to its combination of real-money purchases and randomised rewards.
It is important to note that, despite these concerns, the full scope of these graphical changes is yet to be confirmed or finalised. It’s unlikely that the Ubisoft would change this decision. However, the scale of the changes and what they are replaced by may be part of a conversation that will dominate the Siege community for a very long time.
